NYU Stern MBA Essay Tips and Deadlines for 2022 – 2023

The MBA admissions team at Stern looks for students who effectively demonstrate Stern’s central tenet: IQ+EQ. The admissions committee selects those who have strong intellectual capability, superior communication skills, and a desire to add value to the firm and community. As a result, when responding to the application form’s essay questions, candidates must make sense with their narratives, provide examples from their personal, skilled, or academic achievements, and illustrate a clear vision. The goal is to assist you in making a good first impression with your application materials. Read on to know how to write Stern’s MBA essays. Stern MBA demands the following prompts from its candidates:

Short Answer: Professional Aspirations (150 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font).

What are your short-term career goals?

Instead of asking why you need an MBA to achieve your goals, NYU actually asks what they really are. While many people are seeking an MBA, NYU wants to invest in those of us who can put it to the best use. Short-term post-MBA objectives should ideally be both achievable and aspirational. You must outline your professional ambitions in this essay and briefly explain why they are realistic for you in the context of your career progression to date. Keep in mind that this question is simply for short-term goals, so make sure you answer your short term goals considering your long-term route in mind. Your short-term goal profession should ideally transition to your long-term goal career. An MBA from NYU Stern will help you advance in your career. As a result, you should be using your NYU Stern essays to demonstrate that you are prepared for the opportunities.

Essay 1:

Change: _________ it

(350 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)

In today’s global business environment, the only constant is change. Using NYU Stern’s brand call to action, we want to know how you view change. Change: _____ it. Fill in the blank with a word of your choice. Why does this word resonate with you? How will you embrace your own personal tagline while at Stern? Examples:

Change: Dare it.

Change: Dream it.

Change: Drive it.

Change: Empower it.

Change: Manifest it.

Change: [Any word of your choice.]

This year, Stern dwells upon a question about your mindset toward shift. Given what happened in last years, it seems fitting to concentrate on how you accept change. First and foremost, this is a discussion about thoughts and emotions. Second, it requires you to communicate using branding methods. As a result, there is substance as well as style to this discussion. Clearly, as you attempt to reach this, you must consider what change would mean to you. The rest of the question, however, is more essential than the particular verb you want to fill in the blank. Why are you going with it? Can you give a brief example that demonstrates its significance? Finally, given your primary motivations and the verb, how will you live out this motto as a student?

Essay 2: Personal Expression (a.k.a. “Pick Six”)

Describe yourself to the Admissions Committee and to your future classmates using six images and corresponding captions. Your uploaded PDF should contain all of the following elements:

A brief introduction or overview of your “Pick Six” (no more than 3 sentences).

Six images that help illustrate who you are. A one-sentence caption for each of the six images that helps explain why they were selected and are significant to you.

Note: Your visuals may include photos, infographics, drawings, or any other images that best describe you. Your document must be uploaded as a single PDF. The essay cannot be sent in physical form or be linked to a website.

You have six images to use in this essay. To begin, consider how you will select images to converse with your future fellow students and Stern MBA admissions. Consider the story you would really like to tell. Is it a college or an advancement of your life? How do the images interact to tell the story? While the mode can be anything, the most important aspect of this essay is your subject matter. First, think about what information you want to convey. Then consider your distinct personal qualities as well as what your friends and family admire most about you. Next, consider how you would like your classmates to perceive you. Finally, what details would you give to a new acquaintance?

Whereas the short answer question focuses on your professional objectives, the “Pick Six” essay focuses on personal expression. While you can include something competent or related to your objectives, make absolutely sure that this essay enhances the previous ones. Allow your uniqueness (rather than weirdness) to shine through in this essay. This can be an excellent opportunity to share personal interests, hobbies, or community work commitments.

Essay 3: Additional Information (optional)

(250 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)

Please provide any additional information that you would like to bring to the attention of the Admissions Committee. This may include current or past gaps in employment, further explanation of your undergraduate record or self-reported academic transcript(s), plans to retake the GMAT, GRE, Executive Assessment, IELTS or TOEFL, or any other relevant information.

Stern makes several recommendations for what to include within this essay. This optional essay gives you the opportunity to explain anything which is unclear in your application. Furthermore, any explanation should also include the reasons why you will excel in your college programs at NYU. Finally, keep in mind that you should never use the optional essay if the information in your application is self-explanatory.

You may use this place to highlight any extenuating circumstances that you would like the Admissions Committee to consider (e.g. unexplained gaps in job experience, recommender selection, inconsistent or questionable academic performance, areas of weakness, etc.).
Disciplinary action in undergrad could also be an important topic. Begin by simply and briefly stating the problem. Then, illustrate how you’ve improved and addressed any concerns using evidence.
Furthermore, if you have a gap in your work experience, this is the spot to fill it. As a result, describe what you’ve been doing during the break. Also, take the time to explain rather than excuse.
Finally, talk about how you want to keep the momentum going.
